Do you have questions about Tutoring? Total Education Solutions can help you with resources and professionals to help lead you in the right direction. We recently interviewed one of our online academic tutors about her position and what it’s like to be a TES tutor.

What makes a good tutor?

A good tutor makes learning real, relevant, and rigorous through recognizing the importance of associating the tutoring instruction with the student’s school work. Essentially, tutoring gets to the heart of learning while mentoring and coaching the student through some of their difficult academic struggles. It helps to be able to make a connection with the student through shared interests or common goals.

A good tutor should be experienced not only with the subject material but also with helping students become confident in the subject material. A tutor is enthusiastic and can connect well with students especially when they face difficulty with the work. He or she will listen carefully to the student and will steer the session in a direction that guarantees success of the session.

What have you learned from tutoring?

As a tutor, I have learned to use my knowledge and skills as resources to help others. I have learned that I don’t always have the answers, but I have become better at helping students to find the answers they need to be successful.

I have learned to be patient and have enjoyed helping students reach their goals. Online tutoring has enhanced my virtual skills and helped me direct my resources and knowledge to meet the student’s needs. It improved my self-esteem, teaching performance, and personal growth.

Why is private tutoring good?

Private tutoring, whether in person or online, gives the student a chance to spend as much time as they need to comprehend challenging concepts, successfully complete their assignments, and to ask as many questions as they want. That isn’t always possible in the classroom setting.

Tutoring offers a different perspective to students and bridges the gap between what they learned in school and what they are trying to catch up on. When working with a student through private one to one tutoring, I can help them take a deep dive into what material they are missing and find resources that work to help them fill in the missing pieces.

How many hours of tutoring are recommended?

It depends on goals for the student. Some students just need help with homework completion or exam preparation. This could mean meeting daily or multiple times a week to make sure the work is being done in time for specific school deadlines. If the student is significantly struggling with a subject, many tutoring sessions may be required.

As the student begins to master concepts, the tutor can reevaluate the student’s progress and decide whether to decrease or increase tutorial hours. Tutoring is very individualized and there is no set prescription for what works. It’s important to keep an open dialog with your tutor to determine the best scenario for you or your child’s needs. Although most of the sessions are on average an hour long, some students extended their session to an hour and a half or two hours.

Can anyone be a tutor? What are the qualities of a good tutor?

Individuals with good study skills, effective tutoring techniques, and those who possess the dynamic ability to present information in a variety of ways to help students be successful can be tutors. Most importantly, empathy and compassion are the crucial qualities of a person who wants to become a tutor. A tutor has to be patient. It helps to have already taken the same course or to be proficient in the area of study, but that isn’t always enough.

Many classroom teachers have their own unique way of teaching a subject and it is important to collaborate with the teachers in order to make certain the tutoring aligns with what is being taught in class. That sometimes requires the tutor to learn something new themselves in order to teach it to the student. It also requires knowing when to say, “I don’t know.” Sometimes the art of teaching comes from learning together. A good tutor is always prepared, provides encouragement to the students, focuses on the process of learning, and conducts oneself in a professional manner.

What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student?

A good tutor can identify the learning style of a student and present information in a way that has the greatest effect. A good tutor can be caring and compassionate toward students and help to establish a strong foundation to build on. This foundation that a tutor builds on will lead students to perform better on assignments and exams, instill executive skills, and achieve their academic dreams.

I recently helped a high school student with preparing her speech. English was her second language and, due to that, she encountered difficulties learning and was running behind on her work. Class lectures were going too fast for her since she has not acquired the adequate knowledge. She needed help to write and present a persuasive speech about education. We worked through the process together and she was more confident in her presentation. She received a good score and was thankful for the help. That’s the rewarding side of tutoring.
