What are School Health Services?
School Health Services encompass all elements of health and their impact on students, families and the educational environment.
TES school nurses perform wide-ranging services that include conducting health evaluations for the purpose of making eligibility recommendations for special education programs and services, conducting general physicals including a vision and hearing screening, obtaining developmental and medical history and interpreting medical reports and evaluations for the IEP team. School Health professionals perform nursing services like insulin administration, and they provide consultation and protocol development on school health topics such as Health education curriculum, immunization monitoring, and communicable disease management.
Our School Nurses
School nurses must hold a valid California School Nurse Credential and a Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California and possess a Bachelor’s Degree. Licensed Vocational nurses have a different scope of practice and typically work under a Registered Nurse’s supervision.
School nurses may teach health-related subjects under the supervision of a classroom teacher or assist physicians doing routine physicals via telehealth in the school setting.

Additionally, the health assessment conducted by school nurses informs the process to determine eligibility for special education services so that educators can meet the unique needs of special education pupils and provide access to necessary services and supports.
School Health Services consult with, conduct in-service training for, and serve as a resource person to teachers and administrators and, as an added benefit, they’re qualified to provide trainings on critical topics like Diabetes Management, Epilepsy Training, Medication Administration, Lice, Epi-pen administration, Allergy Policies and Procedures, and meeting student daily living needs.

TES School nurses utilize various developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques to ensure student engagement. Examples include incorporating play audiometry in a hearing screening.

Families are involved in scheduling assessments, providing medical history and information, IEP meeting attendance, health plan development, and facilitating contact with medical team.
