Let’s embark on this journey together, equipped with the tools and insights to make this school year the best one yet.
Before School Starts
Organize Clothing. Donate or dispose of the clothing your kids have outgrown, and organize what clothes they have. Decide what items you may need before school begins. The last thing a parent wants is to spend time each day trying to find a pair of pants that fits.
Set Up A Homework Area. Designate a spot for everything school-related, including backpacks and school supplies. Items like pencils, pens, and rulers should be stored within reach. The area should be distraction-free, where you can offer support and supervision.
Plan an After-School Routine. Create a realistic routine for your kids. This might include looking into afterschool programs, extracurricular activities, and designated study times.
Schedule Checkups and Immunizations: Many schools require proof of CDC-required immunizations. Make sure to research your state’s specific immunization requirements before the start of the year. It’s also a good idea to schedule a physical examination with your child’s provider.
Organize Paperwork. If your child requires special accommodations, ensure you have all the documentation, including past IEPs and medical records.
Prepare for Emergency Situations. What should your child do if you are late picking them up or if no one is at the house when she arrives home? Talking in advance with your child and having a plan will help minimize panic and stress. It is crucial to make sure your child knows who their assigned emergency contact is and how to reach them.
Prepare for the Unexpected: Have a backup plan for unexpected events like sick days or school closures. Know your options for childcare or alternative arrangements.
Attend Back-to-School Night. Visiting classrooms and becoming familiar with the school grounds before the start of school can help minimize your child’s first-day jitters. It also allows you to become familiar with teachers and staff.
Get a Copy of the School Calendar. Ensure you receive a copy of the academic calendar from your child’s school—mark key dates such as holidays, teacher conferences, exam periods, and school events. Use your phone to schedule reminders ahead of time.
Supply Shopping
Schools often provide parents with a list of required items for the school year, which can help them determine what needs to be purchased. These lists are also available at many retail stores and on school websites.
Take Inventory. Chances are you already have a supply of markers, crayons, and notebooks around the house. Before buying new supplies, clean out and organize the old ones. Reusing these items can save you hundreds of dollars over the years.
Look For Deals. Target’s back-to-school sale includes a 20-for-$20 classroom essentials list. The list offers 20 popular supplies – like Mondo Llama 12-pack colored pencils, up&up liquid glue, notebooks, and more. Target also offers quality backpacks for $5 in various colors and prints. School Lunches
Plan Ahead. Decide what you will pack for lunch the next day. Pack non-refrigerated items in the lunchbox the night before to save time. If your child uses the cafeteria, make sure to include additional snacks. Making a list of easy-to-pack foods will help with planning and grocery shopping.
The National School Lunch Program provides low-cost and free lunches for students, depending on your family’s income level. Enrollment is year-round, and the program is a great way to save time and money during the school year.
Keep an ice pack ready to go. Including an ice pack with perishable items will help them stay cold until lunchtime. Keep an extra ice pack in the freezer if you forget to freeze one the night before.
Once School Starts
Communicate with Teachers. Regular communication will help you stay informed about your child’s academic progress, strengths, and areas for improvement.
Coordinate with Other Parents. Coordinate with other parents or classmates’ families regarding group projects, carpooling arrangements, or organizing extracurricular activities around the school calendar.
Stay Informed. Regularly check the school’s website or communication channels for updates on calendar changes, event cancellations, or additional activities.
Attend PTA Meetings. Being actively involved in the PTA allows parents to advocate more effectively for their child’s needs and ensure their child receives the best education and support. PTAs often provide valuable resources and information on topics such as child development, educational strategies, and parenting tips.
By implementing the tips and strategies discussed in this guide, you can ease the transition and set the stage for a successful academic year. From organizing clothing and setting up homework areas to planning after-school routines and preparing for emergencies, each step you take now will pay off in the coming months. Embrace this new chapter with confidence, knowing that with a bit of preparation and a positive mindset, you and your child are ready to thrive. Here’s to a fantastic school year filled with growth, learning, and memorable moments!
